If you ask any of the talented goaltenders that I’ve had the honor of working with what is a skill that I say is the hardest to acquire, they will all undoubtedly say “Knowing when to move and how much to move.”

As I have stated many times before, I think the greatest learning and potential for growth comes from looking at the most difficult situations and the earned goals against. Tonight, I want look at two goals against on traffic situations against two of my favorite goaltenders to watch, Andrej Vasilevskiy and Jake Oettinger.

One thing you will notice on both situations is that both goaltenders are in great position prior to the shot release. As you will see in the videos and the frame by frame shot, both goaltenders end up outside of the net after the shots hit traffic and kick out into the slot. Both end up sliding on a shot that originates from the strong side and getting out of position. One thing that you can do in situations like this to calm your execution down is to cut the ice surface in half. If a shot originates definitively from one side and the traffic is on the strong side, work on shifting your weight in a butterfly, as opposed to pushing and getting a slight slide on the play. You will notice on the videos, because both of these gentlemen are tremendous athletes, that they make a great effort to try to get back into position, but it is too much time and space to make up in the given situation.

Goalies, you would be surprised how many times you actually do too much when executing a save. Again, I cannot stress enough how difficult of a skill this is to acquire, especially under game speed and stress. The more awareness you have of your crease and how much you need to move, the better you will be prepared for each game and the challenges that await you to become a truly elite level goaltender.

When you embrace the difficult challenges, you eventually conquer the difficult challenges.
