✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨

When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo
4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Banwo's debut follows Yejide and Darwin in Trinidad as they navigate love and loss, literally and ideologically. The story is described as a mythical love story, which is technically true, but the romance is more of a subplot. The death these characters experience are at the forefront and guide the story to its end. When the love does arrive, it is instantaneous. It is immediate - truly love at first sight. I enjoyed the way the characters were able to lean on each other and understand each other in so little time. I loved the dialogue in this story and my favorite exchange happens in the last 70 pages. It states:

Yejide: "Don't you have hard things? Things you worry would change everything, if someone knew?"
Darwin: "Well, Life full of those. And yeah, maybe some things you say them and they change everything. But that don't have to be a bad thing. Far as I concern, this thing what happening here with us, it past the point of easy. And I okay with that if you are."

The story was a slow burn that warmed my heart and I'm glad my book club friends picked my selection.
