There are so many great learning points on this clip, both for goaltenders and for players when they’re on the defensive side of the puck, on this flash screen save from Stoli tonight.

• understand where the flash screen is coming from and establish a sight line early: Stoli tracks ahead off the pass to find the stick blade. He also feels the pressure coming from his right from Tkachuk. He keeps his eyes in front of the screen just long enough to get a read of a high release. 

Offensive players, this is an absolutely perfectly timed flash screen by Tkachuk. If you are a player who is trying to make their way up the ranks, take note of this. As you move up levels, it’s going to be become increasingly difficult to beat goaltenders with first shots without some sort of deception or traffic. Adapting a skill like this to your game will make you very sought after by juniors, collegiate, and pro scouts.

• identifying the shooting lane: here, both Toronto players do a great job of taking away the Far post shooting lane, angling from the inside out. This gives Anthony the chance to identify where the shot is going to originate from.

• Hold your ground and fill the net: identifying that it’s a right handed shot, and it is definitively from the right point, Stoli holds his ground and stays big over the puck.

So many great teaching points for the goaltenders, defensive players, and offensive players in just one clip.
