As Cadet Kanon Woodill’s senior season niufootball comes to a close, he reflects on his standout career, which includes the game-winning field goal against Notre Dame in September.

Woodill began his athletic career as a soccer player, but made the transition to football as a kicker. While points add up and can have a large impact on the outcome of the game, kicking typically isn’t a leadership role on the field, something he missed from soccer. To grow as a leader and support his college education, he decided to join #ArmyROTC.

Woodill believes his dual commitment to #ROTC and football has been crucial in building his confidence and leadership abilities, both on the field and off. 

“ROTC is an extension of all the values we were taught in sports, and it gives us an opportunity to continue to be a part of a team after sports are over,” Woodill said. “Everything that you’re required to be good at on the field or on the court translates exactly to being a leader in any branch of the military.”

This season, NIU finished 7-5 overall and ranked sixth in the Mid-American Conference. The Huskies will take on Fresno State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 23.
