Craig Hinchcliffe and several students spoke Wednesday about the CHS educational trip to Italy over Easter Break, which culminated in the group being part of a historical moment: Pope Francis’ final public appearance as he said “Buona Pasqua” – Happy Easter – and blessed those gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.
 
Hinchcliffe is in his 17th year at CHS as a teacher, primarily teaching history. He has traveled extensively with CHS on immersion service trips and educational trips the last three years to Germany, Spain and this year to Italy.
 
The trip to Italy began in Venice, then Florence, then to Rome, which included a special tour of the Jesuit Curia headquarters by Fr. David McCallum, S.J., a Buffalo native who once taught at CHS.
 
On Easter Sunday, the CHS group attended a Mass given in English before heading to St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
 
“We were pretty excited to be able to go – obviously, with his health, it’s been unclear whether he would be able to get out there, but to have him come out and give that blessing was pretty moving,” Hinchcliffe said in Brady Conference Room. 
 
“Personally, it’s slowly kind of sinking in that I was able to receive his last blessing. He’s a Jesuit Pope. I went to McQuaid in Rochester, a Jesuit school, and with just the thread of Ignatian faith and service, it really meant a lot to me to be able to be there.”
