Singer Dana International, a pioneer of Israel’s LGBTQ community, will light an Independence Day torch next week.

Dana, a trans woman, trailblazer and Israeli cultural icon, will carry the torch in the name of tolerance - and takes the pride to the most important stage. When on the same stage also dark voices will be heard - Dana will echo a voice of freedom, of visibility, of pride and of hope.

In a statement accompanying her decision, she has said she “hopes we’re doing the right thing, and I want to see up close who this Shapiro is” — referring to the US pundit, who has expressed anti-LGBTQ views. “You have known me for so many years,” she wrote, “I’ve never done anything in order to be liked. I’m doing everything with pride, my way and I really love my country, Israel.”

Dana International has become an icon not only in Israel, but around the world, after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 with her song Diva. She managed to break barriers, change opinions and bring people closer together - more than many politicians. She performed in front of millions of people all over the world, opened the Gay Games in Amsterdam and the Love Parade in San Francisco. She starred on the annual poster for Amnesty International, and was listed in the top 5 of Time magazine’s most influential people of the year in 1998.  Throughout the years she has represented Israel all over the world not only as a singer - but also as a foreign affairs delegate.
