#EarthDay with Tom Martienssen (martienssen)

Rhinos have long stood as a heartbreaking symbol of extinction. But in northern Kenya, one community has united to give black rhinos a chance not just to survive—but to thrive. So much so, they’ve now outgrown their reserves. For filmmaker Tom Martienssen, this was a story of hope: a living blueprint for how local communities can lead the charge in protecting endangered species.

“When I first committed to filming rhinos, I was told they were socially dull, dangerous, and impossible to document,” Tom shares. That skepticism gave his team rare access to observe and capture extraordinary moments almost daily. From the first black rhino birth in the wild ever filmed, to playful calves, family bonds, territorial clashes, and even veterinary CPR—this was a window into rhino behavior few have seen.

At the heart of the story were the guides—individuals whose deep knowledge of the land and its wildlife shaped every frame. “Their connection to this place is what made this film possible,” Tom says.

Though the threat to rhinos remains, Tom finds hope in the tireless work of the Kenya Wildlife Service. “Their efforts show what’s possible when we work together for the planet.”

Shot on V-RAPTOR and KOMODO-X, with KOMODO also used as a crash cam.
