I recommend a medical ID bracelet for all of my patients who are deaf or hard of hearing. A medical ID bracelet can be a lifesaver for your d/Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) child (and you!). If your child is Deaf and utilizes ASL - no amount of shouting or simplifying spoken language will do any good. If they utilize devices and worst case scenario knocks your child unconscious and their device off their head an ID bracelet is there.

When emergency personnel see “Deaf/ASL” on their medical ID bracelet they can try to prepare to have an interpreter on the scene. If you have an internal device like a cochlear implant they can adapt if an MRI is needed.

My personal bracelet says my full name, “Cochlear Implants,” and my husband’s name and phone number.

Depending on if you get your child a bracelet, necklace, temporary tattoo, whatever - here’s some ideas of what you could include:

Their First and Last Name: Ensures responders know who they are.

Your child’s medical condition: Specify that he or she is Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Presence of Devices (if applicable): Mention any hearing devices or internal implants.

Emergency Contact Info: Your phone number or ICE friend who can assist.

These details help optimize your child’s care in case of an emergency. Stay safe and prepared! 💪
