SUDDEN DEATH #TACOSHACK: The varsity softball team delivered a huge 9-1 win over the Anderson Trojans in a game that meant they were or weren’t going to be playoff bound.

“Everyone had really good energy the entire time,” junior Zara Cacci said, “probably because it was the deciding game for if we went to playoffs or not.”

The extra game, the third district meeting between the two rivals, was necessary because the teams split their district games and finished tied for the final playoff spot at 7-7 in district play.

In the win-or-go-home game, Mac got on the board quickly with one run in the top of the first inning and followed it up with three more in the top of the second. On the defensive side, pitcher Natalie Myrick came out striking out the side to shut the Trojans down in the second inning. In shutting out the Knights in the first two innings of play, Myrick earned five of the six outs via strikeout.

“Our pitcher killed it,” junior Grace Yemington said. “She did awesome, and I’m really proud of her.”

Yemington could have said the same of herself. While anchoring the team’s defense at catcher, she went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, also drawing a walk and scoring one of the Knights’ nine runs.

The Knights added another run in the top of the third to make it 5-0. Yemington led off the inning with a single and advancing to second on L Brotherton’s sacrifice bunt and scoring on J Sanchez’s ground ball to short after a fielding error.

The Trojans pushed a run across in the bottom of the third, the only run they would score during the game.

The fourth inning was full of action.Tallulah McColgin led off the top half with a double and came home to score on Jazzy Urdy’s RBI two-out line-drive single to right. The two-out magic continued as Urdy came around to score after a Yemington double pushed her to third and a Maggie Smith single to right brought her home to make it 7-1.

The Knight defense kept the lead secure in the bottom half of the inning. Yemington caught a high pop up from the catcher position for the second of the inning.
