Yesterday, the Professional Development Section delivered Leadership 1.0 - Principles of Followership to Recruit Class 159. By design, this course is delivered on week two of recruit school. The purpose is twofold. First, we teach our newest employees and future leaders the many elements of followership. Second, it’s an opportunity to engage our recruits and understand their perspectives on the concept of followership. Organizations often teach their personnel how to become better leaders; however, what is missing is the importance and relevance of being an effective follower.

Our definition of Followership is, “The ability to take direction well, to get in line behind a program, to be part of a team, and to deliver on what is expected of you.” The straightforward concept in this definition is to deliver on what is expected of you, which ultimately is to lead. This is a true dichotomy, as there is a contrast between the concepts of followership and leadership; at the same time, they are dependent on one another. We know that all leaders were at one time followers, and we understand the fact that some followers are not leaders. Therefore, the difference between leadership and followership is the process of learning, participating, trusting, and gaining the skills required to one day lead others. Without followers, there can be no leaders.

Leaders expect you to work hard, strive for perfection, and become better than themselves. Followers want to be empowered, taught skills, and trusted as future leaders.
