The FA has confirmed that transgender women will no longer be able to play in women’s football in England starting June 1, 2025, following a landmark ruling from the UK Supreme Court on April 16. 🏳️‍⚧️⚽⁣

The Court ruled that, under UK equality law, the term “woman” refers to biological sex, a decision that’s now reshaping policies across sports. ⁣
•⁣
The FA stated their previous inclusive policy, which allowed trans women to compete in the women’s game, was based on legal guidance at the time. But in light of this “material change in law,” they say their hands are tied. 🤨⁣
•⁣
“We understand this will be difficult for those who simply want to play the game they love in the gender with which they identify,” said the FA, who are now working directly with affected players to find alternative pathways for participation.⁣
•⁣
The Scottish FA has introduced a similar policy starting next season, and England Netball has also announced that its women’s competitions will now be limited to players born female. Other organizations, like English cricket and The Ultimate Pool Group are currently reviewing or adjusting their own rules in response to the ruling.⁣

There are reportedly fewer than 30 transgender women currently playing football in England, all at the grassroots level. The ruling doesn't impact elite international competitions yet but UEFA and FIFA are said to be reviewing the situation. ⁣😔
