Silencing “bad ideas” doesn’t kill them — it feeds them.

Karl Popper warned that tolerating everything — even hate — can unravel a tolerant society. Fair point. But today, the word “intolerant” gets thrown around fast, and often, it’s less about actual harm and more about moral disagreement.

In a polarized country, “intolerant” can mean wildly different things depending on who you ask. That makes Popper’s warning easy to misuse. Shutting someone down in the name of tolerance doesn’t always make us principled — sometimes, it just makes us avoidant. Writing people off as “too intolerant to engage” can be a way to dodge discomfort, not confront it.

And here’s the irony: when we silence people, their ideas don’t disappear — they go underground. Unchallenged. Sometimes, even stronger.

Calling something out isn’t enough. If we want to actually shift things, we need to be willing to engage more critically and constructively.
