The Surf Instructor’s Unexpected Business Lesson

A few years ago on a visit to Hawaii for a corporate offsite event, I had the chance to interview a manager from the legendary Waikiki Beach Boys. I asked him about his biggest challenge, and his answer surprised me.

It wasn't marketing, or competition or the weather. My biggest problem, he told me, was “getting my 20-year-old surf instructors to focus on work instead of girls.
 
Funny? Absolutely. But here’s the insight:

We obsess over differentiation (new products! new features!) when often the real opportunity is maximizing the potential of the people and assets we already have.

The non-obvious takeaway?

Before always chasing the NEW, try asking: are we doing everything we can to help the team we already have do their best work?
