NOW ON VIEW: Torkwase Dyson’s "Akua" transforms brooklynbridgepark into a site of sonic and spatial reflection. This large-scale open pavilion envelops visitors in an immersive eight-channel soundscape composed of Black archival voices, nature field recordings, and electronic tones. For Dyson, sound is a physical vibration that connects us to place. Inspired by a family member’s name and the Akan tradition where “Akua” means “born on Wednesday,” the installation explores how the body perceives space through sound.

Through the concept of “breath as geography,” Dyson examines the spaces between words—subtle pauses, ums, and silences—as carriers of memory tied to land, water, and migration. Surrounded by the East River and city landmarks, Akua offers a space for contemplation and imagination, grounded in the physical and historical landscape around us. Curated by Public Art Fund Senior Curator Melanie Kress with Assistant Curator Jenée-Daria Strand, the exhibition is free and on view through March 8, 2026.
