LIVE REVIEW: Chase Atlantic, OVO Hydro, Glasgow, 30/04/25

‘Are you guys ready for the night of your fucking lives?’
After a full day camped out in the uncharacteristically hot weather, Glasgow roars in approval, a rare mix of hip hop heads, scene kids, rock fans and ravers, all united by the diverse musical soundscape of the Australian outfit.
As Mitchel Cave, ever the rockstar frontman, emerges solo into the spotlight, the opening bars of ‘DIE TO ME’ get things underway, his bandmates soon joining him for the beat drop, accompanied by sky-high flames perfectly fitting for the group’s first UK arena headline tour. ‘Leave all your bullshit at the door, no matter what you are going through at the moment just know you are not alone’.
Hits are rolled out in quick succession, with Clinton Cave’s shimmering saxophone solos adding major impact to the mass singalongs ‘HEAVEN AND BACK’ and ‘Into It’. Christian Anthony meanwhile holds the whole operation together, commanding the stage from behind his guitar, leading plenty of audience interaction. Live band members Patrick Wilde and Jesse Boyle also add extra weight with their perfectly pitched guitar and drum solos, giving the likes of ‘Church’ a pleasingly heavier edge.
‘Who came to see us at King Tut’s?’ Christian asks, calling bullshit at the massive cheer that follows, emitting a far bigger sound than that 300 capacity venue could possibly have held when they made their Glasgow debut all those years ago. Yet this rapturous reception is a clear reminder of just how far they have come, further solidified towards the end of the night as the crowd spontaneously starts chanting for early cut ‘Meddle About’. Never one to shy away from a challenge, they quickly deviate from the planned setlist to scramble together a rendition of the track. As the mega hits ‘Swim’ and ‘Friends’ bring the evening to a close, Chase Atlantic’s elevation to arena-straddling rockstar status is complete. Next stop…festival headliners? Stadium fillers? With a show this refined, don’t count them out.
