On Monday, Skype takes its final resting place in the graveyard of early-2000s services we loved and left behind.

With video calling built into our phones, Slack, WhatsApp, and work email, the miracle has turned into the mundane — even a nuisance at times, when we need to go camera off. But for millennials, Skype was the magic that brought “The Jetsons” to life, BI’s Amanda Hoover writes.

Long-distance relationships were sustained on laptop Skype calls, even if they often glitched. Getting a webcam became a monumental rite of passage. For those early years, Skype realized the future.
