Faith. What is faith? Faith is a strong belief or trust in something usually associated with religion. Well, that hasn’t always been what faith meant to me.

Growing up with split parents and an alcoholic dad, things were not always the easiest at home. From a young age, I knew about the concept of Christianity, but never really cared. Though I would go to church on Christmas, it never meant anything to me. That was until two years ago when my friend asked me if I would come to church.

Previously, any time I went to church, it was with my father, and I did not have the best experiences going with him. But this time was different. I arrived at church and thought it would just be fun to see my friends, but that wasn’t the case. The pastor started talking, and I had this weird feeling in my body I couldn’t describe and still can’t. Everything the pastor said applied to me. It was what I’d been searching for this whole time.

Even though I live my life for Christ now, there have been a few things that have driven my faith to become stronger. Nov. 11 was one of the hardest days of my life. On this day, one of my closest people was diagnosed with cancer. I don’t think words can describe how bad that day hurt. I didn’t care about anything, and it made me question my faith.

Three days after she had been diagnosed, I was lying in bed wondering if God was real, and if so, why he would do this. Then I heard a voice I’m certain was God, and it spoke to me and said, “Trust my plan.”

It wasn’t until two weeks later that I realized what it meant. Though cancer is a nasty, horrible thing, it opened not just my eyes but my aunt’s and my mom’s eyes, and we realized there was nothing we could do but trust God’s plan. Though it broke us, it built us back stronger.

Though I am a sinner and not perfect, giving my life to Christ—and seeing others around me do the same—is the best and most important decision I have ever made. God found me at my lowest and brought me to my highest, and I will forever be grateful for his unconditional love.
