Iowans could see more black bear sightings this spring and in future years, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

In 2024, a black bear was spotted at Clarke University in Dubuque roaming in the wooded areas of the campus. It's not uncommon for one or two sightings to happen in Iowa each year.

Black bears' activity occurs in Iowa typically in late May and June. This is during their breeding season, when a few black bears are more likely to leave Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Iowa went from having occasional sightings to now having two to four bears pass through the state over winter and there could be more, according to an Iowa DNR news release.
