🧠 New research from @NYUGrossman suggests that a 15-minute genetic test may one day help brain surgeons detect and measure cancer cells in real time during surgery.

The tool, called Ultra-Rapid droplet digital PCR (UR-ddPCR), analyzes tissue samples for specific genetic mutations linked to cancer. In early tests, it detected even small numbers of cancer cells—potentially guiding more precise brain tumor removal.

Researchers say it could become the first practical tool of its kind to support real-time surgical decisions, helping remove as much of the tumor and surrounding cancer cells as safely possible.

“With Ultra-Rapid droplet digital PCR, surgeons may now be able to determine what cells are cancerous and how many of these cancer cells are present in any particular tissue region at a level of accuracy that has never before been possible.” said study co-senior study investigator and neurosurgeon Daniel Orringer, MD.
