## Caption

One of the most famous paintings currently hanging in the Barbro Osher Gallery may seem relatively small compared to some of the masterpieces surrounding it—but the legacy of “The Town” is anything but. In fact, nearly half a century after the playwright-turned-artist’s death, Time Magazine wrote: “Guess who invented modern art — August Strindberg!”

Strindberg’s pieces have been called “soulscapes”, and here we can see why: brute power, unsurpassed intensity, and loneliness are all inherent in the sliver of light that is the city skyline in the distance (thought by some experts to be Stockholm), which can only be reached by crossing the large expanse of dark water in the foreground.
