Jiu jitsu was always seen as a self-defense art that required patience, discipline and respect. It grew to the point that it became mainstream, with people learning it for various reasons - self-defense, fitness, competition, or simply for fun. However, a recent event shook the Jiu jitsu community to its core.

A white belt student was injured during a live roll by a fellow black belt. The injury was severe, causing mental and physical damage, and the injured grappler sued the Jiu jitsu school. The hearing awarded the injured grappler millions of dollars, causing everyone to question the safety of training.

As a black belt instructor, I always try to have fun with my rolls when sparring with lower belts, but I also understand the importance of showing respect to the technique. Most moves in Jiu jitsu could be dangerous, and it's important to remember that. It is easy to forget how effective they can be. In certain cases some lower belts can be explosive, strong, and wild. I still need to be able to control the situation and prevent injuries from occurring.

It is essential for Jiu jitsu schools to prioritize safety when training their students in this art. Injuries can happen, but they should be minimized as much as possible. The community needs to come together and prioritize safety and respect.  Jiu jitsu is a fantastic self defense art, but it must be practiced with care and responsibility. As instructors and students, we must alway remember that.
