It’s #InternationalChameleonDay and we’re setting our eyes on George, the veiled chameleon 🦎

This particular awareness day was launched in 2024 to highlight the remarkable diversity of chameleon species, while shedding light on the challenges they face in the wild.

Did you know? Madagascar is home to nearly half of the world’s chameleon species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Yet these remarkable reptiles - famous for their colour-shifting abilities and incredible camouflage - are increasingly difficult to spot in the wild, not only due to their disguises but because many are disappearing.

The physical characteristics of chameleons make them quite different from other types of lizards - and they have a variety of fascinating behaviours that make them even more unique.

Our partners at wildlifemadagascar are dedicated to the preservation and protection of Madagascar's unique biodiversity through a multifaceted strategy and extensive collaborative efforts.

Their approach involves forming alliances with Malagasy communities to develop sustainable conservation solutions that enhance both environmental wellbeing and livelihoods.

By fostering partnerships among individuals, local organizations, non-profit entities and government agencies, they strive to establish impactful programs that bring about enduring change.

During your next journey through the African Rainforest Pavilion, you can visit with George! At the moment, he is shedding his skin which is shown in the photo you see here. We remind guests to be respectful of his habitat, which includes not knocking on the glass 💚
