This cut could potentially weaken the UC system’s ability to maintain its research infrastructure, lead to staffing cuts and more broadly threaten national security and “economic dominance,” said UC Office of the President spokesperson Stett Holbrook in an email.

Filed in federal court May 5, the lawsuit alleges that the NSF’s decision is “unlawful.” The plaintiffs include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Trustees of Princeton University and the California Institute of Technology, along with the Association of American Universities and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
