These layoffs included aviation safety assistants, maintenance mechanics, and nautical information specialists—roles integral to supporting safety inspectors and airport operations . The Professional Aviation Safety Specialists (PASS) union expressed concerns that these cuts would increase workloads and potentially delay safety procedures, especially in the wake of a fatal midair collision in January 2025 that resulted in 67 deaths .  

Further scrutiny reveals that in 2019, during Trump’s previous term, 180 Republican lawmakers voted against the Aviation Funding Stability Act, which aimed to provide consistent funding for the FAA . This historical context challenges the narrative that current air traffic issues are solely due to the Biden administration’s actions.
