On May 13, 1981, St. John Paul II was shot in St. Peter's Square. This was also the 64th anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal.

He later shared his belief that Our Lady of Fatima guided the bullet away from his vital organs, sparing his life. The bullet passed just inches from his heart and abdominal aorta.

This moment profoundly shaped his papacy and deepened his devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. Today, the bullet that struck him rests in the crown of her statue in Fatima.

Our Lady longs to guide and care for us more than we can imagine. Let us turn to her with confidence.
