★ CAPSTONE SPOTLIGHT “The Pedestals We Place” by 4th-year 2D Animation student Denna Alece-Dom ★

“A mixed media doc on the lives of student-athletes at RIT, both on and off the ice, focusing on three all-star players of the RIT Division 1 Men’s Hockey Team.”

★ Why did you choose to tell this story? ★
Coming in during COVID, I almost forgot RIT is a big hockey school. When applying to colleges I didn’t pay attention to athletics programs/sports news. My friend Mike heard that I had never been to a game during my 3rd year, and knew that had to change. It wasn’t until the fall of 2022 that I went to my first RIT game and hockey game ever, thanks to my friend Mikayla. I instantly fell in love! RIT culture around hockey is something I had never seen! The passion, light, and energy that fill a big arena is something special! Corner Crew has some of the most passionate people I’ve ever met, and I could hear their chants throughout the arena. I knew this was a sports culture that needed to be celebrated and shared for more people to see and fall in love with.

When going into my capstone film, I wanted to completely branch away from what I had done before, which were usually darker-toned films with female main characters. I have not seen many mixed-media films during my time at SOFA. I also wanted to make a film based on the communities I am involved with at RIT, all of which got me excited as I moved forward with the project.

★ Filmmakers/work that inspires you ★
Big inspirations for me are Junji Ito, Scott Benson, Bill Watterson, and Atsushi Ohkubo. Some of my favorite shows that inspire me are Arcane, Fionna and Cake, Soul Eater, Madoka Magica, and The Boys!

★ What are you most excited about? ★
Blending the aspects of these real-world experiences that these student-athletes have at RIT with the colorful and imaginative visuals 2D animation allows me to showcase. This film will be exciting to showcase and have as a time capsule for RIT, as a representation of what hockey was like this season!
