The Commencement speaker this year will be Sonia Shah ’90!

Shah is a critically acclaimed investigative journalist and author of prize-winning books on migration, disease, and human-animal relations. These include 2004's 'Crude: The Story of Oil,' 2010’s 'The Fever: How Malaria Has Ruled Humankind for 500,000 Years,' 2016’s 'Pandemic: Tracking Contagions from Cholera to Ebola and Beyond,' and 2020’s 'The Next Great Migration: The Beauty and Terror of Life on the Move.'

A 2024 Guggenheim Fellow, Shah has also written for the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, and the Nation. Whether she is writing about microbes, migration, or pandemics, Shah reinforces her arguments with rigorous research, making her one of the most trusted expert voices in modern science literature.

During her time at Oberlin, she was a triple major in journalism, philosophy, and neuroscience, and served as editor-in-chief of The Oberlin Review. We are so excited to welcome her back to campus! Not only will Shah deliver the keynote address at Commencement on May 26, but she will be awarded an honorary doctor of humanities degree.
