The family of a 30-year-old Georgia woman is required under law to keep their daughter alive, although she was declared brain dead over 90 days ago.

#AdrianaSmith, a registered nurse and mother, was 9 weeks pregnant in February before she reportedly began experiencing severe headaches. According to Smith’s mother, she was receiving treatment at Northside Hospital but was released after receiving medication. The next morning, Smith’s boyfriend woke up to the sounds of her gasping for air and gargling on her blood. She was taken to Emory University Hospital, where a CT scan displayed multiple blood clots in her brain.

Smith was declared brain dead and due to Georgia’s heartbeat law, abortion is banned once cardiac activity is detected which is usually six weeks into pregnancy with exceptions for only the following: rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger.
