#PolicyProfile: “My passion for U.S. policy began to take shape when I was a junior in high school in Minneapolis. George Floyd was murdered a few miles from my school — a moment that deeply impacted me and our nation. At the time, I didn’t fully understand our system of policing, but when I arrived at PrincetonSPIA and took “Policing, Civil Rights, and Social Change” with Professor Udi Ofer, everything clicked. That class opened my eyes to the history and complexities of our criminal justice system and inspired my academic work. For my second junior paper, I collaborated with two classmates through the Policy Advocacy Clinic to review policies in the federal government and in all 50 states on racial profiling, police use of force, felony disenfranchisement, drug criminalization, and related issues. We presented our findings to the Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in Law Enforcement at the United Nations in Geneva — an incredible opportunity that confirmed my passion for this field. Beyond academics, I serve on the Princeton SPIA Advisory Council, providing feedback to improve the undergraduate experience, and I’m a Peer Academic Advisor at whitmanatprinceton. I’m the former president of PrincetonCharterClub and former vice president of PrincetonICC, where I worked closely with the other eating club presidents. I also co-lead the Princeton Overdose Prevention Club, which focuses on preventing overdoses through campus awareness, policy advocacy, and direct service work. Through OutdoorActionPrinceton, I train leaders on intensive trips like my recent one to Shenandoah National Park. These experiences have taught me the importance of teamwork and self-care — lessons I share with the freshmen I advise. At Princeton, I’ve made it a priority to surround myself with people I love and dedicate time to causes I’m passionate about. The combination of policy work, leadership, and meaningful relationships has defined my Princeton experience and prepared me to make an impact in the real world.” Anna Johns ’25. #PolicyProfile is an Instagram series that features members of our community.
