“Today is May the 14th, and we pause to remember that just three years ago, our corner of the world was changed forever.”

We remembered the victims of the racist mass shooting in Buffalo on May 14, 2022 during our morning prayer by Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Chuck Frederico, S.J. The prayer, excerpted here, continued:

Lives ended. Dreams were shattered.
And people were mourning.
No words fully express the depth and breadth of the tragedy that occurred on this day.
We entrust the souls of the just to you, our Loving God.
We entrust to you souls singled out by the color of their skin,
slain by weapons of war and instruments of hatred.
We entrust to you our African American sisters and brothers,
and all other people of every race and nation — victims of any discrimination.

Loving God,
as You hold close those who have died,
we ask your forgiveness,
for all the ways we fail to recognize evil and its long shadows.
We ask forgiveness for our failure and unwillingness to see,
for our failure to value life,
for our contentment with the status quo,
We ask your forgiveness for ALL failure to respect the dignity of our sisters and brothers.

Out of the ashes of these unspeakable crimes, grant that we rededicate ourselves – people of every race, to making of ourselves one family – diverse in our origins, varied in our cultures, languages and gifts, yet beloved daughters and sons of the same loving God, who is forever and ever. Amen!

Canisius will have a candle burning in the lobby of our school today for the memory of those precious lost lives. I ask that you recall a respectful silence as you pass the space.
