The word ‘Várzea’ technically refers to the geographical terrain of the ‘floodplain’ areas football was first played in Brazil in the late 1800’s. ‘Várzea’ is also a word used to describe anything made precariously, something which is improvised, that is broken or not quite right. But as Joseph O’Sullivan (footballtravelman) says, it’s Brazil’s – and especially São Paulo’s – response to Sunday League football/futebol.

After a Sunday spent watching Várzea football in São Paulo’s Maúa, a place big enough to be its own city, we caught up with Joseph to describe his Várzea experience. You can read the full feature at whereisfootball.com #whereisfootball #varzea #brazil #brasil #saopaulo #maua
