At cm_clt this month, cltiscreative recognized local musician Joe May (joemaymusic) with a $250 H.U.G. (“Helpful Unfettered Gift”) micro-grant.

Joe May is a songwriter and producer equally inspired and inhibited by humor, heart, and self-awareness, dissecting his journey through life with laughter and quiet vulnerability. On the stage, Joe’s dynamic live presence transforms his songs into an electric, communal experience. He draws audiences in with his magnetic energy and commanding, yet approachable style. He has captivated audiences at festivals like Shakori Hills Grassroots Fest, Mental Awakening, and Front Porch Fest, where his performances showcase a balance of ambitious musicianship and infectious playfulness.

HUGs (Helpful Unfettered Gifts) are $250 strings-free microgrants awarded monthly to creative initiatives in Charlotte to help propel the project forward or remove a small obstacle to its overall success. HUGs can be used for a wide array of creative projects, initiatives or businesses (for-profit or nonprofit) in Charlotte. HUG grantees are announced publicly at the monthly Creative Mornings.
