The National Transportation Safety Board heavily criticized Newark fire officials on Tuesday, saying the deaths of firefighters Augusto “Augie” Acabou and Wayne “Bear” Brooks Jr. could have been avoided in the massive fire aboard the Grande Costa D’avorio at Port Newark in 2023. The 692-foot-long ship was carrying more than a thousand vehicles when it caught fire and burned for more than five days, resulting in more than an estimated $23 million of damage.
