FIRE CREW: Sacramento Hotshots

The sacramento_hotshots are located in Sacramento, New Mexico, 35 miles southeast of Cloudcroft, and sits at 7200ft elevation with a dominant ponderosa pine forest. Sacramento Hotshots have occupied this base from 1983 to the present.

The journey of this crew traces back to when they were originally established in 1973 as one of the new Region 3 IHCs in the Coronado National Forest. The crew, initially known as Catalina Hotshots, found their roots at the Palisades Guard Station on Mt. Lemmon, just north of Tucson, AZ. However, the winds of change swept through in 1982 when the Coronado National Forest proposed a relocation, citing insufficient funds and facilities.

Several National Forests expressed their interest, including the Kaibab, Apache Sitgraves, and Cibola, but the ideal haven emerged in Lincoln. With existing facilities and a compound/admin site perfectly suited to host the crew amid a burgeoning urban interface, Sacramento, New Mexico, beckoned as the new home.

In December of 1982, the crew made its pivotal move to Sacramento. Under the leadership of George Kleindienst, the Superintendent of Catalina Hotshots, a select team accompanied him to the Lincoln. The inaugural year, 1983, saw George, a crew foreman, two squad leaders, and 16 smokejumpers known as Missoula jumpers, forming the core of the Sacramento Hotshots. By 1984, the crew had officially organized, with Jerry Grim stepping in as Superintendent following George's departure.
