NHL All-Time Goal Leader

On Sunday, April 6th, 2025, Alexander Ovechkin scored against the New York Islanders to officially become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer—surpassing the legendary Wayne Gretzky. A record once deemed untouchable, even by Ovechkin himself:

“I don’t think somebody will break the record, it’s impossible.” – Alex Ovechkin, 2016

Ovechkin now sits at 895 goals in 1,487 games. Gretzky, 894 goals in the same number of games. Two legends. Two different eras. One incredible milestone.

As someone born in 2002, I grew up watching Ovechkin, Crosby, and Kane—legends who shaped the modern game. To see this moment, this once-in-a-lifetime record shattered, is surreal. Inspiring. Historic.
