The football team competed Saturday morning at Lake Travis High School in the annual 7-on-7 tournament hosted by Lake Travis. The Knights went 0-2-1 overall in Pool A, losing to Westwood 19-14 and Lake Travis 40-22, and tying Cedar Park 14-14. Lake Travis won the pool and beat Vista Ridge 21-14 to earn a spot at the state tournament June 27-28 in College Station, along with Dripping Springs. Last year, McCallum went undefeated at the tournament and earned a spot in the state tournament for the first time in school history, but this year’s team has many new faces because last year’s team was senior-heavy. 

Sophomore quarterback Aiden Ilai said that even though the record may not show it, the Knights did well overall and just need to polish things up in a few areas.

“Even with our losses, we were still in all of the games, and it was just a couple mistakes that held us back from winning those games,” Ilai said. “Our biggest areas of improvement offensively [are] decision making on my part and making sure all of the guys [on] the field are on the same page.”

Ilai said that the alternative style of 7-on-7 football allows the team to prepare for different types of coverage and figure out what types of plays work best for the team. Since there will be much roster turnover due to graduation, the team still has to work on connecting.

“The thing we need the most to mesh is to make sure that everyone has bought in,” Ilai said. “Leaders of the team [need to be] able to create an environment where anybody on the team can call someone out if they’re doing something wrong.”
 
Things will slow down for McCallum football for now. There are about three months until fall football practice will start and exactly 103 days until McCallum’s annual week one matchup against Anderson.
