🧪 The world's first effective oral vaccine against cholera was developed by Swede Jan Holmgren, professor of microbiology at the University of Gothenburg. His discoveries have saved many lives around the world, especially among children. 🌍

Holmgren’s research began in the 1970s and laid the foundations of the Dukoral vaccine, which was first used in the early 1990s. Holmgren and his colleagues have also contributed to technology transfer that has enabled low-income countries to produce the vaccine themselves. 👨‍⚕️

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 25 countries have received more than 150 million doses of the vaccine since 2013. However, cholera outbreaks are increasingly common, due to factors such as climate change, floods and the post-Covid economic crisis. Researchers estimate that between 1.3 and 4 million cases of cholera occur worldwide annually. Production struggles to keep up with the global need.

Jan Holmgren has received many awards for his discoveries. This year, the International Vaccine Institute and SK Bioscience awarded him the Park MahnHoon Prize. 🎖️
