Meet the musk ox – an ancient, majestic creature that has roamed the northern hemisphere since before the Ice Age. ❄️ After the ice melted, the musk ox disappeared from many regions, but a small herd made its way from Norway 🇳🇴 to Sweden's Härjedalen 🇸🇪 in the 1970s. Sadly, their numbers have dropped because of climate change.

This summer, a research team went out on foot, exploring the mountains and collecting samples like droppings and wool. 💩 They managed to find five musk oxen, including a calf! 😍

The Musk Ox 2030 research project brings together several major partners, all working to map out the current musk ox population and plan for their future. 🔍🗺️ With the help of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, they’re studying how the musk ox helps biodiversity in mountain ecosystems by spreading seeds. Meanwhile, the University of Toulouse 🇫🇷 is looking into how soil minerals and geochemistry affect the well-being of the musk oxen, offering a deeper understanding of their habitat and needs.

By learning more about the musk oxen’s homes and eating habits, researchers can gather crucial information about their environment. This helps us understand their role in the ecosystem better, which is key to protecting and supporting biodiversity in the long run. 💚

The Musk Ox 2030 project is led by the Musk Ox Centre myskoxcentrum, Vildriket vildriketvildmarkscenter, Lycksele Zoo, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the University of Toulouse.
