What do you get when a brain surgeon 🧠 teams up with a biomechanics scientist 🧑‍🔬? Why, improved helmets, of course!

Swedish company Mips have developed a safety system designed to add protection in helmets against rotational motion. 🔁 The system’s main component is a low-friction layer imitating the brain’s own protection system. This enables a relative motion between the head and the helmet. Brainy stuff indeed! 💡

🇸🇪 The Mips solution is based on decades of research and development at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

It all began in 1995, when Hans von Holst, a brain surgeon at Karolinska, started examining how standard helmets were designed, convinced that the helmets generally available were not providing enough protection against brain injuries 🧠🚫.

He went on to contact KTH with the view to launch research into head and neck injury prevention. This eventually led to Peter Halldin, at the time a KTH student 🎓, starting his doctorate on the biomechanics of injuries to the head and neck. In 1996, the von Holst–Halldin duo presented their idea for the Mips solution.
