My foster died.💔

To foster an animal is an act of love and hope, but this time it came with heartbreak.
Spyro and his siblings were our first foster cats. We had Spyro for exactly 3 weeks before he went to his new home with the most amazing family. They had him for a short 2 months and 5 days. His name was Arthur.

And FIP tragically took his life.

Arthur was diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a disease once considered almost universally fatal. FIP occurs when a benign strain of feline coronavirus mutates within the body. While most cats exposed to the virus never become ill, a small percentage develop FIP, leading to inflammation in organs and tissues.

There is a treatment for FIP now, but it’s difficult to access. The medication is expensive, unregulated, and requires a grueling 84-day regimen of daily injections. For Artie, it was too late. The disease had progressed so far in his little body that he was struggling to breathe. He was actively dying. 💔

Artie’s family had adopted him after losing their beloved cat, Milo, earlier this year. Now, at only five months old, they had to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to Artie, too. Just 2 weeks prior to Artie’s passing, they lost their 12-year-old service dog, Leilani. It was back to back to back heartbreak.

For me, Spyro’s passing was the most difficult thing I’ve experienced as a foster. You pour so much love into these animals, and when they leave your care, you always hope they’ll have long, happy lives.

Spyro/Arthur’s life was heartbreakingly short, but even knowing his fate, they would choose to adopt him all over again.

He leaves behind a legacy of love—a love that was shared deeply, lost too soon, but now lives on in both our hearts and our memories.

Forever, we are bonded in grief. 🌈🤍
