She shouldn't exist.

I know those are harsh words, but no more harsh than the reality of breeding bulldogs. Did you know they typically can't get pregnant naturally? Or that most of them need C-sections to give birth? Without human intervention, this breed would not exist. This makes sense, considering the multitude of health issues that plague bulldogs throughout their often too short lives.

Pemberly is a fluffy French Bulldog. Her recessive-gene parents were bred to try and accomplish a longer coat. Pemberly is deaf because of this. She also has breathing problems and pants most of the time. Can you imagine a life where breathing was always hard?

I remember a vet tech telling us how happy bulldogs were when they were intubated. Because they could finally breathe without effort. Can you imagine?

I love this breed... and I truly believe anyone who truly does would advocate for them to stop being bred. At some point it's just cruel to breed a dog for looks that please us but lead to a life of suffering for the animal. That is not love.

This soapbox is one that has gotten me in trouble before, but it is one I will always stand on. Animals' lives are too precious, too important to not advocate for health, for happiness, and for comfort. Every dog deserves that.
