Want to try this perspective-shifting activity with your students?

Here’s how it works:
1. Choose a theme with five related but different items. I have used “Making Coffee” and “Making Spaghetti.” Both are class favorites.
2. Place one item in each paper grocery bag. Staple the top closed, but leave a hole big enough for students to reach inside without seeing.
3. Students feel inside their bags and guess what the item is. The trick is that they think everyone has the same item, but each bag is different.
4. After they share their guesses, read The Blind Men and the Elephant.
5. Then, go back to the guesses and have students realize that their perspective alone was not enough. They needed to hear from everyone to get the full picture.

This is one of my favorite ways to start conversations about empathy, communication, and perspective-taking. It is simple, powerful, and always gets them talking.

Try it with:
• Coffee beans, filter, scoop, mug, and a water bottle 
• Dry spaghetti, a jar of sauce, a garlic clove, a parmesan packet, and a pot holder
