BLUE ZONES ALL STAR - I’m lucky to be celebrating my dad’s (Roger) 90th Birthday today. 

I’ve gone searched the world for places and people who represent the true lifestyle of longevity and it turns out, I didn’t even need to leave home. 

Many of your may remember Roger’s from the #BlueZonesKitchen cookbooks.  He travelled with me and tasted the recipes.  If he gave it a thumbs down, it didn’t make the book.  He also contributed a recipe in each book. 

ROGER’S 7 LONGEVITY SECRETS 

1-GARDENING —Roger gardens from February-October. Want to be happy for a decade:  Get a Dog.  Want to be happy for life, Grow a Garden

2-FAMILY — He never grandstands but is always quietly there for us— To drive to the airport, fix a water heater, invite us for a meal or provide a bed. 

3-SOUR DOUGH — Roger always has a starter in the refrigerator and a fresh baked loaf on the counter 

4 -CANNING — From June-October there’s always fresh vegetables but the surplus is canned in ball jars so we have garden vegetables all year around. 

5-DAUGHTERS —Roger loves his granddaughters and great granddaughters and they love him back.  It’s our girl offspring that favors longevity 

6-COMMITTED HUSBAND — Roger and Dolly have been together for 66 years.  The live together, support each other.  Mom handles the finances and home management, dad keeps outside the house in perfect shape and does the cooking. 

7- REDEFINED RETIREMENT- Dad stopped working as an educator at age 60 but never stopped working.  He just narrowed his focus on his priorities:  wife, children, grandchildren and graden. 

When I ask him if he ever gets the urge to go back to work, he replies. “Sometimes, but then I just take a nap and the urge goes always.
