Last week, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (dpharaohwoonatai) was in Toronto to promote his portrayal as U.S. Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza in the newly released A24 blockbuster, Warfare (warfaremovie).

Alongside the film’s co-writers and directors, Alex Garland and (the real) Ray Mendoza, D'Pharaoh emphasized that Warfare is not your typical war drama — it’s a cinematic gut punch, meant to dismantle myths and glorified images of combat.

Based on Mendoza’s real-life experience in Ramadi, Warfare recreates a chaotic 2006 Iraq War mission with harrowing realism. Mendoza notes the average age of his unit was just 20 years old.
