Happy #WorldBeeDay2025! The larger bees we see here are rare specialists of prickly pear flowers: Melissodes mitchelli. While many people think of honeybees when they think of bees, honeybees are Eurasian natives imported for agriculture. Florida has over 320 species of native bees, many of which you can see in your yard, and many others, like this one, which are much less common specialists found in Florida native habitats.
