The Department of Justice announced Wednesday it is ending agreements with Minneapolis and Louisville, which were put in place to address unconstitutional policing practices following nationwide protests over the 2020 deaths of #GeorgeFloyd and #BreonnaTaylor.

Under President Biden, a 2023 Justice Department report revealed a pattern of excessive force and discrimination against Black residents by the Minneapolis Police Department. This led to a consent decree requiring the city to reform its police training and policies. Louisville entered into a similar agreement after an investigation into its police practices following Taylor’s death.

Now, the Trump administration is rescinding those agreements, dismissing findings of constitutional violations—such as excessive force and discrimination against Black residents and people with behavioral health disabilities—identified during the Biden administration’s investigations. “Overboard police consent decrees divest local control of policing from communities where it belongs, turning that power over to unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats, often with an anti-police agenda,” said the DOJ’s Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

Additionally, the Trump administration is closing investigations into other cities, including Memphis, TN, Phoenix, AZ, and Oklahoma City, OK, Trenton, NJ, Mount Vernon, NY, and Louisiana State Police where law enforcement was previously found to have violated constitutional rights.
