While studying Bikar and Bokak atolls in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, we observed nesting colonies of the endangered green turtle - and were lucky enough to be there during a hatch!

Did you know that the sex of a turtle is determined by the sand temperature during incubation? If the eggs incubate below 27.7 degrees Celsius, the turtles are male. Above 31 degrees Celsius, they are female. And if the temperature fluctuates during incubation, the nest will result in both male and female babies.
