MORNINGS OF STEEL: On Thursday morning, before the last full day of classes, the Knights of Steel held a morning performance in the fine arts circle to welcome students. According to senior Ryan Bookout, who played triple cello steel pans, the group functioned well under the early morning conditions.

“It was very humid,” he said, “but everyone had a good time playing, regardless of how we sounded.”

Knights of Steel is open to all students, those already in band, like Bookout, and students who aren’t in band but still want to play. Bookout is pleased with the years turnout.

“This year has been great, and everyone loves the class,” he said. “We’re all going to miss it so much. This group has been my favorite by far. My favorite piece is probably ‘Trillium Falls’ or ‘What Now.’”

The performance took place on one of Bookout’s final days playing with McCallum. Having finished playing saxophone in the marching band earlier this year, he was able to end senior year with something educational, fun and light-hearted.

“Knights of Steel has played a huge part in introducing me to the world of percussion,” he said, “and strengthened my ability to collaborate in an ensemble.”
