I remember going to a handful of Hope services growing up, mostly during the holidays. Looking back, I had no idea who God was, but if someone had asked me if I believed, I would’ve said, “Yes, of course!”

My parents went through a very difficult divorce when I was entering middle school. This created a lot of tension, anger, and resentment in my family, which continued for years and, I believe, left us all feeling lost and lonely. Growing up, I was known as the spirited and tenderhearted child, but somewhere along the way, I felt like the hurt from the divorce quieted everything that made me me.

About two years ago, I recognized the dark and isolated place I was in. I was frustrated that I was so good at hiding the hurt I felt, and even more frustrated that I was the one responsible for dealing with it, despite not having caused it. As a result of this frustration, I developed a handful of unhealthy habits, trying to run with the crowd around me. I was stuck in a constant cycle of sadness, covered up with temporary fixes … until Jesus.

Around that time, I started attending Hope regularly, going to Sunday services as well as REVIVE. God was so intentional about the ministries and communities he placed in front of me. One day at a time, he has been picking up the broken pieces and healing my wounds—some of which I didn’t even know I had.

I believe the most beautiful part of my story is that I often forget about the hurt and struggles of my past—not because they weren’t significant, but because God has completely transformed me and everything I know about this life of mine. I’m in constant awe of how much joy and love flooded into my life after allowing Jesus to do what he loves to do: save us.
