Alberta Health will no longer be issuing individual alerts for potential measles exposure locations in southern Alberta. The majority of infections have been in unvaccinated children located in southern Alberta and every day lately they've been issuing alerts.

Measles can linger in the air in a room for up to 2 hours if someone infected had been there, simply from breathing (or coughing, sneezing, etc).

Measles is also one of the most infectious diseases in the world and it has a reproduction number of 12 to 18, which means that on average someone who is infected will likely spread it to 12 - 18 other people, in an unvaccinated population.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘀

While measles can be mild in some, it often leads to serious complications, especially in vulnerable populations. Infants/children/pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems are the most at risk. 

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

• Ear infections (otitis media) – can lead to hearing loss.
• Diarrhea – leading to dehydration.

𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

• Pneumonia – the most common cause of measles-related death in children.

• Encephalitis – swelling of the brain, which can cause seizures, deafness, or intellectual disability.

• Blindness – especially in malnourished children.

• Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) – a rare, fatal brain disorder that can appear years after infection.
